Chemical name is O, O-dimethyl S-[2-(methylamino)-2-oxoethyl] dithiophosphate. Pure insecticide dimethoate is white needle crystal with a camphor smell and industrial product is usually light yellow brown emulsion. In terms of physical properties, melting point is 51 to 52℃, boiling point is 86℃, the relative density is 1.28 and the vapor pressure at room temperature is 1.13 Mpa. Solubility of this product is low in water, whereas it is higher in most organic solvents such as alcohol, ketone, ether, ester, benzene and toluene. This product has very strong systemic and contact effects and its insecticidal spectrum is wider than the average product because it is contact and stomach toxic to insects and mites. The mechanism is to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and impede nerve conduction and cause the insects to death. With these functions, it can be used in control of sucking mouthparts and chewing mouthparts pests and spider mites in vegetables, fruit trees, tea, mulberry, cotton, oil crops and food crops.

This product has a medium toxicity and the acute oral LD50 of original drug for male rats is 320-380mg/kg, dermal LD50 for mouse is 700-1150mg/kg. For human, the maximum tolerated dose is 0.2 mg/kg/day and the safe concentration for fish is 2.1mg/kg and LD50 for bee is 0.09 micrograms /head.
