This product, also known as methyl parathion or O,O-Diethyl O-(4-nitrophenyl) phosphorothioate, contains organophosphorus structure. The industrial product is a yellow-brown oily liquid with garlic odor and pure product is white crystal with melting point of 36 ℃. Because of contact and stomach poisoning effects, it can be used on prevention and control of many agricultural pests. As a broad spectrum insecticide, the mechanism for this product is to inhibit the activity of cholinesterase in nervous system, thus killing the pests.

At room temperature, insecticide parathion methyl is stable in neutral and weak acidic media and there is no dramatic change for the concentration of effective ingredients after long time. However, it can react with strong oxidants so mixing with them is prohibited. This product is highly toxic and poisoning can be caused through esophagus, respiratory tract and skin. In case of poisoning, atropine or pralidoxime can be used for treatment. As well as that, melons are prone to develop drug injury so this product can't be used together with alkaline pesticides.
